The governor, lieutenant governor and 200 other dignitaries will dine on the Emporia State University campus Tuesday evening for the Kansas Cavalry’s annual encampment.
The Kansas Cavalry is made up of business leaders, community leaders and development officials from around the state who are interested in promoting economic development in Kansas.
The role of the group has evolved, according to Kent Heermann, director of the Regional Development Association of East Central Kansas.
“There was a time when Kansas Cavalry members would go out of state to trade shows and make calls on local industries,” Heerman said. “Today we assist the marketing functions of the state with the governor’s office and we work with department of commerce with their international marketing efforts.
“Some of it is to get Kansas goods and services outside the U.S. to new markets and encourage new investment in Kansas from companies outside the United States.”
Tuesday night, the encampment will end with induction of two people into the Kansas Business Hall of Fame, housed on the ESU campus.
This year, Howard Fricke, chairman of Security Benefit is the contemporary inductee. Fred Harvey, who invented the Harvey House Restaurants, is the historical inductee.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Kansas Business Hall of Fame.
During the dinner, the winner of the Kansas Exporter of the Year award will be announced. Five Kansas companies have been nominated for the honor.

The Governor is interested in economic development? Isn't she the one that thrice vetoed a $3,500,000,000.00 ($3.5 Billion Dollar) electrical generation project for our state? That would have been the largest economic development project in our state in 30 years.
