A for-profit medical screening company will be in Emporia from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 26 at the First Christian Church, 202 E. 12th Ave.
The company, Stroke Detection Plus of Des Moines, Iowa, provides four different types of screenings at varying costs.
Ultrasound screenings for strokes, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and peripheral arterial disease are $40 each, or $100 for all three. An osteoporosis test for abnormal bone density can be done at a cost of $40. All four tests comprise a “full wellness profile,” which is offered at $120.
The company’s information sheet states that strokes are the No. 3 cause of death in America and the No. 1 cause of disability and nursing home admissions.
The stroke screening shows build-up of fatty blockage in the carotid arteries, the release stated.
Although most strokes come on without warning, the company’s news release stated, people who carry the following risk factors are more likely to have strokes. The factors are:
- Over age 40
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- More than 20 pounds overweight
- Lack of exercise
- Family history of stroke or heart disease
The warning signs are:
- Sudden numbness or weakness on one side
- Sudden loss of vision
- Sudden confusion or dizziness
- Sudden severe headaches
The peripheral artery disease screening checks for blockages in the legs.
Abnormal PAD results often indicate a high risk of coronary artery disease, as well as PAD. PAD risk factors include:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- History of coronary artery disease
Warning signs are:
- Numbness, tingling, or pain in legs
- Loss of hair on toes and feet
- Leg cramping that is relieved with rest
Abdominal aortic aneurysm risk factors are:
- Family history
- High blood pressure
- smoking
“The vast majority (of aneurysms) are without symptoms,” the news release stated.
The news release states that all screening results are reviewed by a board-certified, licensed physician. Results are mailed to participants with 14 business days.
Appointments are necessary for the screenings and can be made by calling 1-877-732-8258.
