THE DOLLAR GENERAL Literary Foundation, which gave $10,000 to the Flint Hills Technical College. The money will go to the Adult Education Center, which will use the money to further its basic education outreach and literacy programs.
• Dorine Harter, who is a new member of the insurance professionals hall of fame. The award came during the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Kansas. She is the 51st member to achieve hall-of-fame status.
• Kevin Swint, who purchased Wall Industries. The company makes headlight-aligning equipment. The company will now be called American Aimers.
• Mary Kuhlmann, who celebrated her 100th birthday.
• Organizers and participants in the Emporia State University golf tournament and auction. The event raised more than $22,000 for ESU athletic scholarships.
• Fanestil Meats, Madelynn’s, and Amanda’s Bakery, which received awards of excellence or awards of merit from the Kansas Department of Commerce.
• ESU baseball player Keith Hernandez, who signed a free-agent contract to play with Detroit Tigers.

This coming Tuesday night, I have tickets for the Giants vs. Tigers game at AT&T Park. I was going to root for the home team, but it seems I need to defy the crowd and root for a fellow ESU alumnus. Congrats Keith!
