Interchange project delays traffic this week

Turnpike construction delayed travelers on Tuesday and could again on Thursday as workers set beams for a new bridge at the Emporia toll plaza.
According to Kansas Turnpike Authority officials, workers set concrete beams on the Turnpike with large cranes. Each time a beam was ready to be set, traffic traveling both directions was stopped, which also caused some backups for traffic entering the Turnpike from Interstate 35 and also at detour points on U.S. Highway 50 west of Emporia.
Workers hope to do more work on the bridge Thursday, but wet weather could delay that work until next week. Still, they want drivers to know there may be delays on Thursday.
