Barring a surge of write-in voters, several candidates for office already have been elected because no one else filed for office. Two incumbents will have opponents, one in the primary and one in the general.
The deadline for filing for office was noon Tuesday.
Four current office-holders face no opposition in the August primary — Treasurer Dora Hartig, Democrat; Register of Deeds Vicky Lopez, Republican; Sheriff Gary Eichorn, Republican; and County Attorney Marc Goodman.
Long-time state representative from the 76th District, Peggy Mast, will defend her seat in a primary election in which she will face fellow Republican Tony Trimble of Coffey County. The district includes 2 precincts in Emporia, much of Lyon County and Coffey County and a portion of Greenwood County.
State Senator Jim Barnett, 17th District Republican, will be opposed in the November general election by Democrat Kitty Frank.
The district includes Lyon, Morris, and Chase counties and portions of Marion, Greenwood and Coffey counties.
Other races in this area will be determined in the general election. They candidates and the offices for which they filed are:
F 2nd District County Commissioner: Philip E. Winter, Democrat, Admire, and Teresa Walters, Republican, Emporia.
F 3rd District County Commissioner: Chris Bartel, Democrat, Madison, and Rollie Martin, Hartford, Republican.
F County Clerk: Michael (Mike) Dorcey, Democrat, Emporia, and Tammy Vopat, Republican, Emporia.
Other filings, all by Republicans, include:
Agnes City Township Treasurer, Dorothy Aye, Allen; Americus Township Trustee, Gerald L. Myers, Americus; Americus Township Treasurer, Lloyd Brown, Americus; Ivy Township Trustee, Phil Mott, Admire; Ivy Township Treasurer, Elden G. Kuhn, Admire; Jackson Township Trustee, Noble Thornton, Hartford.
Candidates for Reading Rural Fire District No. 1 positions are:
Mark R. Shoemaker, Reading, Position 1; Glenn Alan Barrett, Reading, Position 2; and Russell H. Balding, Reading, Position 3.

Peggy has done a great job. Hopefully, she will be back in Topeka in January. Thanks for your service, Peggy.

Sorry, but Peggy is too right wing for me. Also, I received
a very sarcastic e-mail response from her when I was responding to an education issue she did not favor. I know
for a fact that at least one other teacher in Coffey County received the same response, so it must have been her "official" education response. Sorry, but Kitty Frank has 100% of my voter education support and my vote.

I'm a bit confused by your comment, garfield. Peggy Mast is not running againts Kitty Frank. Peggy is running against Tony Trimble in the primary.

I'm sure Peggy, like myself, is getting tired of everything being about more money for education. You got an extra $1 billion, how much more do you want? Peggy does a great job and cares about her district. She'll have my vote.

Situveux1, thanks for confirming what everyone knows that Peggy Mast is the biggest enemy that education has in the state house. Her tenure is about to come to an end in the general election if not in the primary. And your distortion of the current funding of education doesn't help her case.
