After going undrafted in last week’s Major League Baseball draft, Emporia State baseball player Keith Hernandez signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
The senior catcher hit .462 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI and was named the Division II Player of the Year this season by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He also was named the MIAA Player of the Year.
Hernandez joins fellow ESU alum Mark McBratney in the Tigers’ system. McBratney also signed a free agent contract with the Tigers following the 2007 season.
