Dollar General boosts literacy

More adults in the Emporia community will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills, through a grant to Flint Hills Technical College from the Dollar General Literary Foundation.

The foundation has awarded $10,000 to the college’s Adult Education Center, which will use the money to further its efforts in basic education outreach and literacy.

Rick Dreiling, the foundation’s chief executive officer, said the college’s Adult Education Center has a positive effect on the community.

“We are proud to help our neighbors take a major step toward improving their quality of life by supporting Flint Hills Technical College Adult Education Center’s literary initiatives,” Dreiling said in a news release.

The foundation, which began in 1993, has awarded more than $24.5 million over the past 15 years to nonprofit organizations that advance literacy in its 35-state market area.

The foundation accepts proposals each year. Organizations that want to receive requests to submit proposals should send their group’s name, a contact person’s name and mailing address to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, P.O. Box 1064, Goodlettsville, TN 37072-1064.

Harter is honored

Dorine Harter, a New York Life Insurance agent in Emporia, is a new member of a professional hall of fame.

The award came to Harter on May 15 at the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Kansas’ annual conference in Topeka. She is the 51st member to achieve hall-of-fame status.

A member of the association for 27 years, Harter has been with New York Life for more than 25 years and has earned numerous awards during that time. She has served the organization in a variety of capacities, including a term as president. She is the current national committeeperson.
