IN REPLY to the article published on May 29 regarding pit bulls: Emporia must be the pit bull capital of Kansas.
We must be 20 years behind all other cities and towns in terms of dog ordinances and laws. Eighty percent of the pit bulls in this town are likely not registered or licensed; is that good ownership? Children walking these dogs on our city streets couldn’t control them if they had to.
You can paint their nails and put ribbons on their ears. You can also chrome-plate a .44 magnum. Does this make it less dangerous?

I use to live in Emporia and you are right Walt. You are behind in time. I use to think there was an underground pitbull rink somewhere around there. People need to read up on the dogs. . . it is the breed and the owner. Pits are very aggresive and once they taste blood it's all over they will never be the same. A lot of people think it's cool to have a pit because it shows other people that they have a tough dog, therefore they are tough too. Not the case. . .you are just living on the edge to the day your pit attacks you or your little ones.

What is wrong with you people???? Have you ever owned a Pit Bull?? Have you ever known someone that had a Pit Bull? Most likely not. Come to my house, meet my dog! She might lick you to death so beware. You people that post all thses aweful things, and say these aweful things just really have no idea! I had a friend once that was scared to death of Pit Bulls and she came over to my house and totally fell in LOVE with her. She could not believe how loving and gental she was. People like you make me sick! "Pits are very aggresive and once they taste blood it's all over they will never be the same"
That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read!!!!!

Thank you, Mr. Schuler. You are so right; and quite timely. Just this week I have had two encounters with Pit Bulls within Emporia city limits. The first came Wednesday night, June 4th. My daughter called from her cell phone and was in her car in front of her home on Wilman Court. She and her little dog were trapped inside the car by two dogs; one a pit bull and one a boxer mix. They were circling her car. I grabbed a revolver and was on the way to her rescue when she called back and said they finally ran off and she was able to dash inside her house with her dog.
The other incident occured just this morning, June 6th. My wife was driving to work at 7:55 AM and called to warn me there was a Pit Bull roaming loose at 18th and Meadowlark Lane and to be careful If I was going to be outside. This is the second time in two weeks we have seen that dog running loose near the mall.
Deluded, irresponsible, and obnoxiously fanatical owners of Pit Bulls (two perfect examples represented above) picture their dangerous dogs as persecuted pussycats, but anyone with a lick of sense knows better.
It's time for the city to take action. We need very strict laws against either ownership of dangerous breeds or at the very least, the control of these breeds.
Eventually someone is going to be terribly injured, perhaps killed, and when the inevitable happens there will be questions asked as to why our city council allowed it to happen by not addressing the situation when they first became aware.
We must legislate some fear now; or compensate for death later.

Walt I am behind you on this one. There is a 10 y/o that walks his pitbull daily by our house and continously I have to go and yell at him for teasing his dog with my beagle through the fence. He gets him wound up by yelling YEH!YEH! while tugging at the leash. This dog is not being walked, he walks the kid. Everytime I go out there and lecture him he walks away with a damn smile. This is an accident waiting to happen and wish I knew where he lives so I could talk to his parents. Once a pitbull attacks they wont stop till something or someone is dead. THEY DONT JUST BITE like other dogs. I have been bit by a variety of dogs but once they bite they normally back off. Pits dont back off, make the owners responsible, make them carry liability insurance in order to own one just like a car. If they love the dog as much as they say and dont believe they are aggressive it shouldnt bother them to do this.

If an owner of a Pit Bull has to get liability insurance for their dogs, ALL DOG OWNERS SHOULD! Bjnemp how do you even know 100% for sure the dogs were Pit Bulls? You dont...

If I had to I would, I love my dog and trust her behavior and would get insurance for her if needed. I have no problem with that and I agree lets do it with ALL dog owners. It would help cut down on the people who own dogs that cant even take care of themselves.

Well, Sunshine, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. The breed is rather easy to identify, you know. It's not like they are mongrel mutts; which, by the way, usually make the most lovable pets.
You have made your intelligence quite clear. Don't insult mine.

I am very sorry to hear that some people in Emporia are capable of the shortsightedness required to pick one breed of dogs to aim their fears. If sanctions are put against owners of bully breeds, then in the age of political correctness, all owners of breeds connected to attacks toward people or animals must also be sanctioned. This includes: Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Boxers, Mastiffs, Malamutes, Chows, Terriers, even the little ones like Chihuahuas & Pomeranians, along with others of the hundreds of breeds. What people must realize is no dog is completely safe. We should liken the dangerousness of dogs to the dangerousness of other animals, including people.
There is concern about the capability of children controlling dogs. I am concerned about anyone’s ability to control their dog(s). Even adults have problems controlling dogs over 60lbs. What this all comes down to is the owners themselves, as they hold the ultimate responsibility. I am in favor of stricter “at large” laws charging owners with dogs running at large & additional charges for unlicensed animals. Laws such as these do make a difference if they are enforced regularly.
I am a responsible owner of a Bully breed. She is fixed, licensed, and kept under my constant supervision when outdoors. She minds well, but I do not underestimate her strength or speed. If others would practice this type of dog ownership...we would not have these types of discussions.

i would have to agree with both sides. I have owned pits and never had a problem. I have five kids and would not hesitate to own another. this is the problem i have about the whole situation. Has anyone on here personaly been attacked by a pit. I have been the victim of four dog attacks. Yes one was a pit but the police found out that the dog had been abused so i do not fully blame it. The other three dogs happened to be a black lab, which i spent two years living next door to. another was a jack russell terrier, and the last was a chihauah{i know that is not how you spell it}. All but one of these attacks happened as i was passing by the owners house. why is it that you never hear about any other breed attacking people. I personally believe that a dog is like a weapon, put it in the right persons hands and there will not be any problems but put it the wrong hands and there is going to be trouble. Please do not hate the breed, hate the stupid a@# owners that do not take care of their pets and show them the love and attention that they deserve. this goes for all animals.
