Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...
FLINT HILLS Technical College, which set a summer enrollment record. This summer, 197 students enrolled, compared to 122 students last summer.
Emporia’s JCPenny store, which was recognized by the company as a top-performing store. The store received the Chairman’s Award, placing it in the top 15 percent of Penny’s stores across the nation.
• Lee Alderman, who was hired as the new executive director of the Emporia Rescue Mission.
• The city of Emporia, which is working to beautify the city by enforcing the mowing ordinance and working to clean up graffiti.
• Howard Magathan, who will take over as the new ride captain for Emporia’s Patriot Guard Riders. He replaces Debi Fuller.
• Jane Reeble, who has been chosen to receive the 2008 Emporia Distinguished Citizen Award from the Jayhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The annual award goes to people who have made significant contributions to local youths.
• Stephen and Tamara Cole, who are buying the Wheat State Grille at 707 Commercial St. They say they plan to change the name to Cole’s and change the menu.
