Workshops for practicing teachers offered this summer

A wide variety of workshops are available this summer for educators of all grade levels and subject areas. The workshops are offered through Emporia State University’s Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. Information regarding fees and materials needed for the workshops can be found at www.emporia.edu/jones.

Monday and Tuesday — Rainbowing I. A two-day workshop for grades 3-12 teachers introducing them to the RAINBOWing process. The workshop’s presenter, Judy Henry, is the creator and developer of the RAINBOWing process and has over 30 years of teaching experience.

Wednesday — Red, White & Blue Data Analysis. A one-day workshop for K-12 classroom teachers, administrators & target area chairpersons to review, analyze and present their schools testing data. Bob Winkler, the workshop’s presenter, has successfully implemented this process to assist teachers with a practical method of using data analysis in making instructional decisions.

June 12 — Building a Solid Foundation: Math Facts, Computation & Problem-Solving. This is a one-day workshop for grades 1-6 classroom & special education teachers to learn research-based activities with proven results to increase students’ achievement in mathematics. The workshop’s presenter is Bob Winkler.

June 13 — Rainbowling II. This workshop is for teachers who have already completed the two-day RAINBOWing I introductory workshop. This one-day workshop will feature application of the Six Trait Writing Model. The workshop’s presenter is Judy Henry.

June 27 — Adventures in Words: Building Vocabulary for Reading Comprehension. This workshop is for grades K-6 classroom teachers wanting to improve their vocabulary instruction. The workshop’s presenter, Carol Hailey, has taught middle and high school English for over 30 years.

July 9 — Implementing “The Daily 5.” This workshop is for elementary classroom teachers looking to improve students’ independent literacy and development of reading and writing habits. The workshop’s presenter, Erin Pittenger, was KQLA Teacher of the Month in May of 2006 and a recipient of the 2006 Kansas State Horizons Award.

July 16 — Strategies for Struggling Readers. This workshop is for elementary teachers and Title I intervention teachers. The workshop’s presenter, Mischel Miller, is a reading consultant and is currently employed by Southwest Plains Regional Service Center.

Aug. 4 — Tips and Tricks for Analyzing & Presenting State Assessment Results. This workshop is for principals, test coordinators, curriculum directors & counselors looking for effective ways to analyze the state assessment results and to present the data to staff, parents and the board of education. The workshop’s presenter is Bob Winkler.

Aug. 5 — On Common Ground: Improving Classroom Writing Instruction and the Kansas Writing Assessment. This workshop is for grades 4-12 classroom teachers looking to improve their teaching of writing. Matt Copeland, the workshop’s presenter, is a language arts and literacy consultant and was recognized as the 2006 Distinguished Kansan of the Year in Education, a 2005 Milken National Educator, and a 2003 Kansas Master Teacher.

Aug. 6-8 — Brain Gym 101. This three-day workshop is a practical, dynamic, personal development program which can be used by people of all ages. The workshop’s presenter, Dorothy L. Gray, a veteran teacher with over 35 years of experience, is on a mission to make learning easier for children and adults, help them experience success, and increase their self-confidence.

Aug. 19 — Hitting the Bullseye: Articulating Local Curriculum from the Kansas Standards. This workshop is for curriculum directors, teachers & building administrators. Many schools across the state are using the Bullseye Curriculum Model to identify and prioritize the Kansas curricular standards to local curriculum for deep alignment to the indicators and success in reaching AYP. The workshop’s presenters are Kim Rasmussen and Sherry Reed.

Aug. 22 — When Harry Met Ruby: Effective Classroom Management for New Teachers. This workshop is for classroom teachers in their first three years of teaching. An effective teacher is a good classroom manager who knows the effective teacher manages the classroom and an ineffective teacher disciplines the classroom. The workshop’s presenter is Carol Hailey.
