Tech college classes

The Flint Hills Technical College offers these classes for the community.

• Bicycle Safety for Everyone! From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at FHTC. Taught by Lt. John Koelsch and Officer Jeff Eubank of the Emporia Police Department. The class is described as a “hands-on” course designed for the whole community — parents and kids, students, commuters, leisure cyclists and even drivers who need a refresher on bicycle laws.” Participants will learn essentials, such as how to fit your bike and helmet properly, how to navigate in traffic, how to avoid accidents and more. Breakfast is included. In case of rain, class will be taught June 14.

• Beginning Digital Imaging: From the Camera to the Computer. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at FHTC. Taught by Michael Bird. Participants will learn the basics of digital camera and scanner operation, learn “how to choose the equipment that’s right for you, how to use it, as well as how to get your digital images or old print photos onto your computer,” stated the news release. By the end of the class, the student will understand basic digital concepts such as resolution and picture formats and be able to use them to optimize your images on the computer.

• Basic Woodcarving I from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at FHTC. Taught by Millard Harrell. This course is the first in a series to teach the basics of woodcarving. Upon completion of this course, the news release said, students should be able to “identify and understand the use of basic woodcarving tools, recognize the relationship between wood grain and specific carving cuts and perform them, demonstrate routine sharpening skills, complete simple projects utilizing the principals of relief and in-the-round carving techniques and demonstrate proficiency in using the acrylic tint and wash method of finishing woodcarvings.” To learn more about the course and the instructor, see http://www.foundwoodcarvings.com/woodcarving_instruction_3.htm.
