Emporia Single-A
finishes season
The Emporia Gold Single-A 16-and-under baseball team finished its season last weekend at the state tournament.
The Gold went 1-2 on the weekend, losing to eventual finalist Manco in its finale. Emporia took a bad break in the seventh when a one-run game turned into a three-run lead for Manco.
“It’s just one of those things where you get a bad bounce and it went over our third baseman’s head and two runs scored,” coach Richard Evans said.
Remmington Pinick had two RBIs in the loss.
Emporia’s lone victory came against Lansing, 12-2, winning in four innings with Adam Ewy throwing a complete game.
The Gold finished the summer season 27-12, winning its zone tournament to qualify for state.
Griffey trade needs his approval
The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to trade Ken Griffey Jr. to the Chicago White Sox, FOXsports.com reported, but the deal needs Griffey’s approval. The veteran star was to decide today whether he would OK the trade.
Griffey, 38, can approve or deny the deal because he is a player with 10 years of service in the major leagues and five years with the same club. He has 608 career home runs and is batting .255 this season with 15 home runs, 53 RBIs and a .355 on-base percentage.

Bad coverage? Just what do you expect? I seem to remember every Legion home game covered this summer by the gazette, and you have the nerve to come on here and say these teams aren't covered enough? What do you expect? Do you actually think the gazette is going to send their reporters to road games during the summer to cover bad Legion baseball teams?
Check out most of the other papers in the state, and you'll find that they don't give two shakes about the Legion teams. You should be happy these teams get the coverage they get, you ungrateful snob.
Get a life. You sound like the parent of a kid who didn't get quoted enough in the paper.

Whithout having to get sarcastic......If you would like coverage for out of town games then maybe you should write up a run-down of the games and e-mail it to the gazette. I know for a fact that is what a lot of smaller teams do (like the Emporia All-Stars who actually won state). How else would the gazette know what happend at all those out of town games?

In the past few years legion road games were covered in the paper and just not a side note as sports briefs. Ecspecially a team that was at state. So batbatly or should I say tough guy! I was not complaining on home game coverage. I should have been more clear on that point. I can speak from personal experience on how they use to report on all road games. So just to let you know I am not a parent but a former coach who use to be interviewd by the gazette. And yes I am at a town and grew up in one that does and did cover legion no matter how they played. I take it your a person who has never step between the lines and hooked it up. People like you who only think the paper should cover teams when their good should just stay on the sidelines. The team I am talking about was not bad, they had a very good year and went to state. No matter good or bad you need to support from your home townand newspaper.

sowhat,
If you can provide me with a specific year where the gazette covered ALL road games the Legion teams played (which would be impossible, just so you know), then I will apologize. But until then, I maintain my stance that covering Legion road games would be an unreasonable thing to expect of the paper and its TWO PERSON sports staff. They don't even travel to cover Emporia High road games unless they're at state, so it's ridiculous to expect it for the Legion teams. But if you can prove it has happened before, and not just one specific instance, then I will eat my crow.

Just to clear one thing up. I never said that the staff traveled with the team. They would call me every night after the games or the next morning. The issue that I have on road games and ecspecially the most recent at state. They make the stories a side note in the sports briefs instead of a article on the front of the sports page. I'm not saying they demand front page access everytime, but at least they need some face time on the front page. So you are right on the staff traveling on the road. The only time they traveled with us was at state. At least they didn't talk about use in sports briefs. So need to eat crow, I think this was just a miss communication on my part.

Why is it SOMEBODY has to ruin a good thing that happened for the youth of Emporia. Sowhat and Batbatly, you should step back and re-read what you have posted. If I were you I would be completely embarassed for your child-like bickering over a great program for young men who have a passion for baseball. The team members of all three teams worked their behinds off this summer to improve their skills at the game. The gazette has many venues they must cover and as and Emporia A-16 Blue parent, I think they did a great job. Maybe they weren't there for the out of town games, but I personally cannot complain about the lack of coverage. I do know that for the most part the coaches were either contacted by gazette and radio staff, or they called in themselves with the results of the games.
The staff at the Gazette and KVOE should give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

Congratulations to the Emporia All-Stars for winning state and I look forward to seeing them in Emporia's youth baseball programs in the future.
