Hearing postponed

A preliminary hearing has been set back for a 55-year-old Emporia man accused of attempted intentional second-degree murder for a shooting that occurred during an argument at a northwest Emporia home.

Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman said that Dwight Swafford, who was to have a preliminary hearing today, will appear in Lyon County District Court at 1 p.m. Aug. 12.

Swafford is accused of shooting William Michael Calvert, 29, during an altercation July 6 at the home of Swafford and Calvert’s mother, Denise Calvert, at 2507 Lincoln St.

William Michael Calvert was airlifted in critical condition to Via Christi St. Francis medical center in Wichita, where he underwent treatment for a gunshot wound. He has since been released from the hospital.

Volunteer tonight

Leftover lumber from the playground building project at Peter Pan Park will be used to build park benches for the playground. Construction of the benches will be done between 7 and approximately 9:30 p.m. today at the shelter house adjacent to the new playground.

Volunteers are needed to help build the benches and to move them the short distance to the playground.

“If they want to bring their own tools to use themselves, that would be great,” said Denise Dorcey, spokesman for the Peter Pan Playground group.

In addition to building and installing about half a dozen more benches, we will be putting up the plaques for sponsors of the major components.

If you can help, we plan to start about 7 p.m., with the hope that the rain will have ended and the temperature will be going down a little.

If you have tools and can bring them, we will need the following: 10" chop saw, router, electric and battery screw drivers; and hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, tape measures, extension cords and a square.

This should be the last of the actual building for the playground. We are working with the Parks Dept. to get a sidewalk installed that will run from the street to the entrance of the playground and then all the way around it. We're also trying to get some lighting installed, but we have to raise more money before we can move into that phase.

Finally, a heads up that we'll be forming a group to look after the long-term maintenance of the playground. This group could possibly expand its interests to other parks and playgrounds in the city, along the lines of a Friends of the Parks organization. It will be up to the members of that group to decide what it wants to do. We will out a message early in September about an organizational meeting for this group.

Anyone interested in our parks and playgrounds is invited and encouraged to participate in this new organization. Please call or write me at 620-794-1622 or dorceyhaus@cableone.net; or my husband, Mike Dorcey at 620-794-3476 or mikedorcey@cableone.net.
