Candidate chats

The Gazette Web site will be host for two special online chats Wednesday afternoon. Peggy Mast and Tony Trimble, Republican candidates for the nomination in the 76th District of the Kansas House, will each participate in 1-hour chats with Gazette readers. Trimble’s chat will begin at 1:30 p.m. and Mast’s will begin at 2:45 p.m.

Questions for either chat may be posted on The Gazette Web site, www.emporiagazette.com, in advance or during the chats.

The chats will be moderated, with the moderator selecting questions and setting the order in which they are asked.

Pickens brings plan

TOPEKA — Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens is beginning a series of town hall meetings on energy with an event Wednesday in Topeka.

Pickens is promoting a plan to increase the use of wind and natural gas to reduce the nation’s reliance on foreign oil. He wants to use wind to generate electricity and free up gas for transportation.

He has embarked on a $58 million campaign. Spokeswoman Melissa McKay says Pickens plans a series of meetings across the Great Plains.

The first is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Hall on the Topeka Expocentre grounds in Topeka. Doors open at 2 p.m., and organizers hope several hundred people will attend.

Why Topeka?

McKay said, “Kansas is a great state for wind energy.”
