Junior team wins MAYB Tourney

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

The North Lyon County Junior Wildcat basketball team won the seventh-grade division of the Manhattan MAYB tournament this past weekend.

The team of boys from Admire, Americus and Emporia were one of four in the division. The teams opened the weekend Saturday with pool play. NLC won its first game, 37-30, against the Falls City Tigers. The Manhattan Indians won the second game of pool play, 49-47, with a last-second shot. Pool play concluded Saturday night with a 47-22 loss to the Sabetha Blue Jays.

Bracket play with the same four teams began Sunday after a coin toss to determine seeding. Manhattan had a 3-0 record for the No. 1 seed, but the other three teams ended pool play 1-2. NLC drew the No. 4 seed and faced Manhattan in the opening round.

As in the first meeting between the teams, NLC kept pace with Manhattan, finally drawing ahead for a 45-39 win. The championship game pitted NLC against Sabetha. This time, NLC led the entire game before winning 54-49.

Manhattan was the final tournament of four the team played this summer. Team members are Donovan Read and Slaytor Parks of Admire; Jacob Beck, Cody Campbell, Eric Huddlestun, Luke Larson, Christopher McWilliams and Cole West of Americus; and Jerel Morrow of Emporia. They are coached by Duane Parks.

High school team takes 3rd

A Northern Heights High School team took third place in the A bracket of the 9th-10th grade Division 2 at the same tournament. The team went 2-1 in pool play, winning against Axtell and Northeast Kansas Storm and losing to the Knights.

NHHS moved into the A bracket as the No. 2 seed. NHHS lost to the Santa Fe Trail Chargers in the first round and faced the Knights again in the finals. In the second meeting between the teams, Heights led the entire game and won by an 11-point margin.

Team members are Joel Young of Admire; Matt Denton and Nathan Stinson of Allen; Matt Boyce, Nathan Campbell, Alexander Larson, Gail Lee and Teeino Tabares of Americus; and Dylan Olson of Emporia. The team is coached by Derek Parks.
