Emporia's Taylor Clark (3) leads off second base during the Emporia AAA's game against Andover in the American Legion Zone Five Tournament Monday, July 28. Emporia lost 9-8 ending their season.
Don’t be fooled by the Emporia AAAs’ 9-25 record this summer.
The AAAs’ season ended Monday night in Andover, where they lost, 9-8, to Andover in the AAA American Legion Zone tournament. With a win over Andover and one more win Monday night, Emporia would have been on its way to the State tournament.
“The baseball season like this, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Emporia coach Aaron Lechien said. “It was a gradual progress through the whole year and they definitely learned how to compete and play hard.”
Emporia got off to a strong start against Andover, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, 2-1 in the second and holding a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Andover took the lead in the fifth inning, and Emporia was left playing catch up the rest of the game.
Emporia had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, as the AAAs were down just one run with one out and runners at the corners. However, the next two hitters struck out.
Zack Gifford led Emporia, going 2-for-4 with his two outs both coming on line drives. Jared Krause anchored the defense at shortstop and finished 2-for-3 with two walks.
