THE STUDENTS of the Emporia school district, who met the Adequate Yearly Progress standard mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The schools had been using a district improvement plan because of failure to meet the AYP standard in previous years. Superintendent John Heim called the district’s progress “absolutely phenomenal.”
F Staff at the David Traylor Zoo, which will replace the two black swans and two cereopsis geese killed on June 22. The black swans will cost $75 each, while the pair of cereopsis geese will cost $700 combined. Three youths were charged Monday in the killing of the birds.
F Emporia and area students participating in this weekend’s Shrine Bowl activities. Emporia High’s Edd Noonan and Lyndon’s Quinn Kirsop will suit up for the East team, and Chase County’s Brian Palermo was chosen for the West squad. The first Kansas Shrine Bowl 5K All-Star run on Saturday morning will feature 60 senior cross country runners, including Emporians Tyler Anliker, Jacob Davies, Asher Delmott, Andrew Wayman and Michaela Reynolds, as well as Sharon Zeller of Olpe. Three area students will perform in the Kansas Masonic All-State Marching Band: Emporia’s Andrew Sanchez and Northern Heights’ Annelise Adams and Victoria Harkins.
F The ESU Summer Theatre, which wraps up another fine season this week. It is the campus institution’s 54th season.
F The folks at Walburn’s Athletic Club, who are using a zero-interest loan to greatly expand their quarters on Commercial Street.

I wish you would add the folks at Dayton's and the Frame shop too. They reconditioned the floor of the old Outfitters where they moved and it is absolutely beautiful. I wish you'd go see it.
