Band at the Noose
“The Usual Suspects” will perform at the Noose, 323 Commercial St., around 8 p.m. today in conjunction with the bar’s one year anniversary. Fans are advised to arrive early, as seating is limited and this will be the band’s first appearance there in some time. The band is known for “their informal, irreverent, fun style of performance of tunes from the 60s and 70s,” said the news release. Bob Haselhuhn sings, plays bass, keyboards and 6-string guitar, S.C. Dixon on 6- and 12-string rhythm guitar, Dan Ratzlaff fills in on percussion and backup vocals. In addition to the “oldies” format, the band frequently performs original songs as well. The Noose will announce a beer special on the day of the performance.
Brown Bag
The Wednesday noon Brown Bag concert at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave., concludes with “Emporia’s Got Talent,” featuring 12 local people competing for prizes. Children who are present at 11 a.m. can create an art project with the Emporia Arts Council. Pizza and beverages will be sold by Wheat State Pizza. Participants are to bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, events will be held inside the library.
Live in the Lot
Live in the Lot, sponsored by Flint Hills Music, will have the bands, “Holding Lines” beginning at 7:30 p.m. and “The Tallgrass 7” at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The events are held in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street.
Classes
Art classes continue at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St.
Classes for children 6-11 are Mono Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday; Beginners Wheel Throwing from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Aug. 7; Ceramics Hand-Building Level 1, through July 31.
Classes for ages 12-16 include Ceramics Hand-Building Level 2 Wednesdays and Fridays, July 30-Aug. 8; Linoleum Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. concluding July 30; Wheel-Throwing Techniques from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 7; Beginners Wheel-Throwing from 2 to 4 p.m. through Aug. 1; Mono Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday.
Classes for 17 to adult are Linoleum Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Pre-registration is important because classes must have a minimum number to meet. To register, call 343-6473 or stop by the center at 618 Mechanic St.
Kids festival
Kids 4 Arts Festival will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Flinthills Mall. No admission charge. There will be entertainment by area students and activities for all school age children. Also, drawings, hula hoop contest, streamer fun, balloon making by “Bubbles” and much more. Writers’ conference
The B20s, the McPherson area writers’ group and the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation will be hosts for the first WORDFEST, a writers’ conference, on Sept. 5 and 6 in McPherson. The conference will include sessions from area and local published authors and writing instructors. On Sept. 5, there will be a reception for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the museum. Sept. 6 (Saturday) will be a full day of sessions, including those given by native Emporian Denise Low-Weso, Kansas Poet Laureate and Marilyn Coffey, Pushcart winning author and poet. The registration fee is $75 if registered by Aug. 15 or $85 after Aug. 15. The fee includes the Friday night reception, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and four sessions of your choice.
