The Emporia 10-and-under All-Stars are one win away from a State title after taking two victories over the weekend at Cal Ripken State in Fort Scott.
On Saturday, Emporia took a 2-1 triumph over Haysville.
Tate Demler started the game pitching and went three innings, while Bryce Baumwart pitched the final three innings.
Emporia scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth, as Jared Mercer came in off the bench with a single and later scored on a single by Baumwart.
Haysville answered with a run in the top of the sixth before Emporia answered with the game-deciding run.
Ryan Mejia hit a single then stole a base, and Josiah Duncan followed with a single that scored Mejia.
Emporia posted nine hits. Mejia received the Cal Ripken WOW award, and Baumwart received the Cal Ripken MVP for the game.
On Sunday, Emporia came through with a 6-3 victory over Cimarron River.
Demler started the game by pitching two innings, allowing only one run. Brian Aranda came in to pitch in the third inning and recorded two outs before Bryce Baumwart pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.
Emporia had a strong fourth inning, as the team batted around and scored six runs.
Tyler Hertlein started the inning with a double, and Mejia followed with a triple. Then, Trent Burd scored Mejia with a single, Jared Mercer reached on a walk, Demler followed with a triple, Baumwart got on base with a walk, Nick Kirmer hit a single and Brady Baumgardner followed with a single. Cimarron River started a fifth-inning comeback, scoring two runs before the Emporia pitching and defense shut it down.
Demler came back for the sixth inning to record three strikeouts to end the game.
Emporia had 11 hits in all. Baumwart received the Cal Ripken WOW award, and Mejia received the Cal Ripken MVP award for the game.
Emporia will play Cimarron River in the winners bracket champion game this morning at 11 a.m. There will be a second championship game at 1:30 p.m. if Emporia loses the first championship.
The State Champion team will represent Kansas at the Mid-West Regional Tournament in Burlington, Colo., on Thursday.
Emporia 14-and-unders advance to State
The Emporia 14-and-under Babe Ruth team won the District 6 Tournament on Saturday, taking 21-2 and 17-2 victories over Linn County in Emporia.
Emporia advances to the eight-team State Tournament of Champions on Friday where it will face Paola at 5 p.m. in Hillsboro.
