Gets $800 scholarship
Ben Reilly, a 2008 graduate of Emporia High School, has accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award to attend Fort Hays State University for the 2009-2009 academic year, where he plans to study music education. Reilly was involved in Spartan educational theater, Thespians, EHS Improv Team, forensics, debate, band and theatre and on the honor roll. He is the son of Gwen Laflin and Mike Reilly, both of Emporia.
National Merit scholar
Martin D. Hinrichs, an honors graduate of Emporia High School, has received a National Merit Scholarship from the University of Oklahoma. Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution, said the news release. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Hinrichs, who plans to study engineering, is the son of David and Edith Hinrichs of Emporia.
Graduate at Hays
Spring 2008 graduates of Fort Hays State University include Emporians Kari Sue Taylor, associate’s degree in radiologic technology and Jessica A. Wolf, bachelor’s degree in social work.
Washburn graduates
Emporia 2008 graduates of Washburn University include Kathy Kiefer, bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting; Johanna Peterson, summa cum laude, bachelor’s degree in biology; Terri Robinson, bachelor’s degree in human services; Sherri Stover, bachelor’s degree in human services. Cheslea Ginn of Emporia, a summer graduate of Washburn University, will graduate with an associate’s degree in radiologic technology. All participated in the commencement ceremonies held May 17.
