Emporia Gardeners of America

The 2008 officers of the Emporia Gardeners of America club are Ken Johnson, president; Beth Dayton, first vice president; Sharon Morrisey, second vice president; Tom Haskett, secretary; Doug Morrisey, treasurer. Ken Johson is the bulletin editor. Gail Sudlow is the past president. Members of the board of directors are George Lodle, Ann Lodle, Joanne Foyle, Doug Morrisey, Richard Wager and Velma Walker. The club now meets at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at the First United Methodist Church. Other locations of meetings are announced in The Gazette Agenda column on Monday.

Flint Hills Optimist Club

The officers of the Flint Hills Optimist Club are Bob Burenheide, president; Steve Graham and Rich Jaggard, vice president; George Durler, secretary. Rick Buck is editor of the weekly newsletter. Members of the board of directors are Bob Glover, Tom McEvoy, Darrell Jones, Brian DeWitt, Steve Younger, Joe Michaels and past president Brett Stewart.

Lions Club

The Emporia Lions Club annual meeting and installation of officers was held June 18. District Governor Tom Badger of Manhattan inducted new member Clay Sligh and Jessica Jones. President Bob Grover presented a service citation to Steve and Nina Haught for their work with sight programs and synergy partnership programs. Grover also presented the Lion of the Year award to Sally Conard, treasurer of the club. Roger Heineken spoke at the Lions Club annual banquet about the William Allen White family.

Sertoma Club

Sertoma Kansas District Governor Terry Cuthbertson of Topeka installed new officers of the Sertoma Club of Emporia during the evening dinner meeting June 25. Officers are John Newland, president; Ulli Wallace; Rod Symmonds, treasurer; Bob Hush and Shaun Parks, sergeants-at-arms. Members of the board of directors are Aaron Bura, Elton Jensen, Kerry Wallace, Jim Stolfus, Perry Ott, Glenn Boyce, Warren Brown and Les Nuessen. Ron Dinkel is the newsletter editor. Cuthbertson also presented Newland with a plaque and pin in recognition of term as club president and congratulated the club on leading the Kansas district in new member growth during 2007-08. Installed as new members were Cora Brown and Kerri Thompson, who joined the club in March. It was announced that there are always openings for workers, (ticket seller, engineer and conductor) at the miniature train in Soden’s Grove Park. The train runs from 6:30 until dark on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays; and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursdays.
