City’s slurry seal program will Begin Monday

Preliminary work in the city’s annual slurry seal program will begin on Monday, weather permitting.

Street Department Supervisor Ron Childers said that employees of Musselman and Hall of Kansas City, Mo., will come to Emporia Monday morning to begin staging equipment and sealing cracks before the slurry work.

The work will include area north of 18th Avenue in Country Club Heights, as well as in Becker Addition and in the area of Redwood and Apple drives.

“Once they get into town, (Musselman and Hall) will typically give me a daily schedule,” Childers said.

Preliminary crack-sealing work will begin on Monday, in preparation for laying the slurry seal. The crack-sealing should not impede traffic and will not close streets, he said.

The slurry work will begin by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, depending upon weather.

The company’s workers daily will put door hangers on the front doors of homes to alert residents that their streets will be closed the following morning while the work is done and drying.

Childers said streets usually are re-opened by 3 p.m., although humid weather can delay drying and may add a few hours to the re-opening times.

“We don’t want people tracking oil into their house,” Childers said.

The total cost of the project is $149,424, which includes applying about 103,000 square yards of slurry seal and 8,000 pounds of crack seal, he said.

To ensure the work does not interfere with traffic from Shrine Bowl activities, Morningside Drive will be the last street to be slurried. If the project goes as planned, it could be completed by Aug. 1.

“We get rain days, it could string out into August,” Childers said.
