At the market

Saturday’s Emporia Farmers Market will have a lot of activities along with the home-grown produce and homemade goodies.

At the market, which runs from 8 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street, there will be the Homegrown Celebration. Events will include a “Murphy’s Menu” cook-off and a watermelon contest.

Saturday events are sponsored by ESB Financial.

Burlington barbecue

A barbecue competition, arts and crafts, live music and more is planned tonight and all day Saturday at The WildBlue Barbeque Cook-Off & Expo in Kelley Park in Burlington.

Organizers also have scheduled a golf tournament, horseshoe-pitching contest, kids’ pedal-power tractor pull competition and a carnival. A free electronics recycling drop-off and business booths also will be in place and Coffey County Sheriff’s officers will run an Ident-a-Kid project.

Nathan Smith and Eric Mallory will provide live music, and a “blues jam” is planned from 7 to 8 p.m. today and 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

A barbecue meal will be sold from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children. The barbecue is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.

For information, call the Coffey County Chamber of Commerce, (620) 364-2002 or toll-free at (877) 364-2002.
