Emporia bus drivers place in competition

Four Emporia Public School bus drivers have received top awards in district and state School Bus Safety Competitions, according to Transportation Director Shelby Harvel.

Jason Beyer placed first in the Conventional Bus Drivers, Rookie Division, at the State competition in Salina in June. He also received the first-place award at the Southeast Kansas District competition.

In the Experienced Division, Cheri Payne placed 11th; Bobbi McDiffett placed 24th, and Charles Hullett placed 25th. The team of Beyer, Hullett and Payne also placed third out of 15 teams.

At the District level competition, Payne placed first, McDiffett fourth, and Hullett, fifth in the Experienced Division.

Harvel said the School Bus Safety Competition is a basic test of knowledge and skills used when driving a school bus. The competition stresses safety and is a learning experience in which participants have an opportunity to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.

“The ultimate goal of the competition is to provide advanced training for safety and build self-confidence in all school bus drivers,” she said.

In addition to the written exam, the competition includes a performance test on skills such as parallel parking, backing into a stall from a 90-degree angle, right turn, railroad crossing and student loading.
