Road closing
Road 310 between Roads F and G will close Friday for six weeks. According to the Lyon County Highway Department, crews will replace a bridge.
Diagnose sick plants
K-State Research and Extension is sponsoring a Sick Plant Clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Flinthills Mall center court. The clinic is being held to help people with their ailing plants, including trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, fruit crops, turf grass and indoor plants. Master Gardener volunteers and K-State research and extension horticulturists will help diagnose plant problems, identify plants, weeds and insects and discuss general pest management. Those who have questions are to bring a sample for diagnosis or identification.
Swim meet
The Emporia Aquatic Club will be the host for a U.S. Swimming-sanctioned swim meet at the Jones Aquatic center Saturday and Sunday. More than 160 swimmers and 15 teams from across the state are expected to compete. Spectator admission is free and a swim shop with the latest swim apparel and accessories also will be available. Saturday events, featuring the distance swimmers, are to begin at 9:45 a.m. and conclude about 3:30 p.m. Sunday events, featuring the sprint swimmers, are to begin at 8:45 a.m. and conclude around noon. The center will reopen for public swimming at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Animal neutering
The “Neuter Scooter” is traveling again on July 22. The H. Dale buck Animal Welfare Fund “Big Fix” spay/neuter assistance program is booking appointments to fill the July 22 surgery schedule at the No More Homeless Pets-Kansas City veterinary clinic. Birthday party
Madelene Redding will be the guest of honor at a birthday party from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Emporia Senior Center to celebrate her 90th birthday. Hosts will be her children, Fred and Lillian Spellman and Al and Betty Ziesmer.
