Mast-Trimble forum

A forum has been scheduled for candidates in the only primary race on the ballot in Lyon County.

Peggy Mast of Emporia, incumbent 76th District state representative, and challenger Tony Trimble of Burlington will talk about their candidacies and answer questions at the forum, which will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Emporia Christian School. Both Mast and Trimble are Republicans.

The forum will be moderated and will begin with a short list of questions to introduce the candidates, determine their positions on current legislative issues and provide information about the candidates themselves.

The forum, expected to last one and a half hours, is sponsored by the Kansas Coalition of Concerned Citizens.

Sirens need repair

The Emporia Police Department said this morning that the emergency sirens at 15th Avenue and Merchant Street and in the 400 block of East 12th Avenue are out of service pending repairs.

The police news release said the 12th Avenue siren was struck by lightning and has been sent back to the factory for repair. The Merchant Street siren was found to be not working during the weekly service checks.

After last week’s tornado warning, some Emporians had complained that the sirens could not be heard in their neighborhoods.

The sirens are tested once a week at 10 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting. Emergency announcements can also be made over Cable One television channels.

Today’s news release urged people to monitor weather conditions on television, radio and on NOAA Weather Radio.
