HARTFORD — Along with Lyon County, the city of Hartford has a sales-tax question on its Aug. 5 ballot.
Donna Kuhn, Hartford city clerk, said the sales-tax question is for a 1-percent increase in the sales tax. The city has a 5.8 percent sales tax now. The tax increase would take effect in January if passed by voters.
The money raised by the tax would be used to improve streets throughout the city of Hartford, Kuhn said. The tax, unlike Lyon County’s proposed 1-percent tax increase, would have no sunset because the project is continuing.
“It doesn’t have to have a sunset date when it’s ongoing or continuing and we’ll probably need it well into the future,” Kuhn said.
Hartford is in the middle of a water project as well. The city received grant funds to lay new water lines and street improvements can’t be done until that takes place. The water project is expected to start sometime in the spring.
“We want to have this (sales tax) in effect and have the revenue ready so that when the (water project) is done we can start in and maintain and improve our streets,” Kuhn said. “All the streets within the city limits are in need of repair.”
Kuhn said the water project is on track as scheduled.
“Everything is on track and on time and coming along, so we’re excited about that,” she said. “We’re anxious to get those in and our streets repaired.”
