2 Emporia wrestlers take titles in Topeka

A pair of Emporia wrestlers took first in the folkstyle wrestling tournament at the Kansas State Sunflower State Games last Saturday at Seaman High School in Topeka.

Nash Burtin (19-29 years old, 125 pounds) won his division with a 4-0 record, while Kyle Hale (19-29, 160) also took a championship after finishing 2-1.

Emporia also had a pair runner-up finishers: Mike Tovar (19-29, 150) and Damian Herrera (10-under, 110).

Alex Polzin (19-29, 150) took third, while Daniel Herrera (8-under, 58) went 1-2 but did not place.

Burtin added another championship on Sunday, posting a 2-0 record in the 125-pound division of the Takedown Wrestling Tournament.

Sunflower Gymnasts compete at Nationals

The Sunflower Gymnastics had eight top-10 finishes at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic National Championships held in Kansas City, Mo., on July 1-6.

Ali Norlen (third) and Zave Goodrich (sixth) had top-8 showings in trampoline, while Gabi McNeilly (third), Goodrich (third) and Mylah Knight (sixth) were the top-10 finishers in the double mini trampoline.

Norlen (fourth), Becca Waggoner (eighth) and Danielle Davenport (eighth) all finished in the top eight in tumbling.

Harder shoots

10-over on 1st day

of Jr. Amateur

Emporian Fletcher Harder sits in a tie for 104th after the first day of the Kansas Junior Amateur at the Wichita Country Club in Wichita.

Harder shot a 10-over 81 on Tuesday, firing a 4-over 40 on the front nine and a 6-over 41 on the back nine. His scorecard included one birdie, 11 pars, three bogeys, a double bogey and two triple bogeys.

Sam Wempe of Topeka and Mitchell Gregson of Waterloo, Ill., lead after Day One, as both fired 2-under 69s.

After today’s round, only the top 64 golfers will advance to the match play portion of the tournament that runs through Sunday.
