U-10 Energy posts 1-2 record at State

Monday, July 14, 2008

The Emporia Energy 10-and-under softball team went 1-2 last weekend at the Class C Gold State Tournament in Wichita.

The Energy’s first-round loss on Friday night was against the Great Bend Quicksilver by a score of 13-0. On Saturday, after a 6-hour rain delay, Emporia defeated the Manhattan Optimist Sting, 5-3. The team exited the double-elimination tournament later Saturday evening by losing 5-0 to the Columbus Titan Attack.

The Energy, after being off for nearly three weeks, could not muster any offense in its opener against the Quicksilver. Abby Weiser had the team’s lone hit.

In Saturday’s win against the Sting, Emma Harmon and Sierra Potter each had a single, and Weiser belted a double. Harmon and Morgan Holmes each scored a run, while Weiser and Potter each scored twice. Kylee Giffin, Haylee Boulanger and Potter each were credited with an RBI apiece.

Emporia got down early by allowing Manhattan to score three runs in the first inning, but the team never gave up as it came back to score two in the second inning and four more in the third inning to get the win.

The Energy’s final game of the tournament was a rematch of the Regional Championship against the Titan Attack. Columbus led the game 1-0 going into the third inning, but then added four more runs to advance to the next round of play.

Aly Boyer had the only Energy hit.

Despite the early exit from the tournament, coach Jared Giffin said he and assistant coaches, Adam Smith and Kent Weiser, were pleased with the girls’ performance and the improvements they made throughout the year.

The 10s finished the season with an 18-15 record and placed third or better in five of the seven tournaments they played in, which included a championship at their home tournament in June.
