Double jeopardy?

The Lawrence Journal-World reported this morning that attorneys for Ramona Morgan, the woman charged with running down and killing two highway workers on Sept. 11 in Douglas County, are arguing that she should not be tried for the deaths because an earlier trial on other charges in Osage County has raised the issue of double jeopardy. The Osage County charges, of which Morgan was convicted, stemmed from a chase into Osage County after the fatal accident.

A hearing on motions is scheduled for July 30. The trial is to begin Sept. 2.

The accident occurred along U.S. Highway 59 at Pleasant Grove, south of Lawrence. One of the men killed was former Emporian and Emporia State University graduate Tyrone “Ty” Thomas Korte.

Children’s screening

A free medical screening clinic for children under 18 with orthopedic problems will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 26 at the Flint HIlls Community Health Center, 420 W. 15th Ave., sponsored by the Kansas Shrine Bowl.

This free clinic will help identify children in the area who can benefit from the expert care provided at Shriners’ Hospitals for Children. Conditions include club foot, scoliosis, bowed legs, missing limbs, burns and burn scars, hand, arm and shoulder problems, dislocated hips and rare bone diseases.
