Area children learned a lot and had fun during their summer vacation while attending Flint Hills Technical College’s second annual Kid’s College this week. A second week of Kid’s College will be offered Monday through July 18.
Kid’s College is a week-long, half-day activity designed just for children that have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grades. Children had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers with lots of fun, hands-on activities.
The week-long, session included five different classes. Sydney Roy, a seventh-grader from Wichita, liked the dental assisting day. “We got to take pictures of each other’s teeth. It was fun!” she said.
Children “played” dental assistant for a day and participated in the examination process. Kid’s College participants poured dental molds that they took home, made temporary crowns, learned about sanitation and cleanliness and saw their mouths through a dental Ora-Vision Monitor.
FHTC partnered with The Sweet Granada to offer a Chocolate Classroom. Children participated in a hands-on chocolate experience that included the history of chocolate, the math and science of baking, making dipped-chocolate novelties, and preparing, baking and frosting cookies. “The chocolate classroom was my favorite because we got to dip graham crackers and it was a new experience”, said Brock Davis, a seventh-grader from Olpe.
Next, the students created their own movie, using 3-D animation on a variety of objects. The students “starred” in the movie, flying on an animated carpet. They were able to take the movie home to share with family and friends. “We animated a football and a flying carpet. It was confusing, but fun!” said Zac White, a sixth-grader from Emporia.
Claire Hamlin, a fifth-grader from Americus, really enjoyed animating the flying carpet.
“Animating the flying carpet was more fun and easier to do than the football. Working on the computers was a lot of fun too,” she said.
Children were able to let their creativity go wild while working with staff from the Emporia Arts Council to create a variety of arts and crafts through hands-on art activities including large sidewalk chalk drawings in the courtyard area, just south of the main building on campus.
Today, students were to travel to Shepherd’s Valley Farm outside of Americus and learn about raising fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, chickens, turkeys and lambs. They were also to harvest blackberries, gather eggs, pet sheep, go on a tour of a greenhouse, watch honeybees work and play at the campground along the creek, including climbing the Swiss Family Robinson tree house.
