Hartford city council

The City of Hartford agenda for the Wednesday meeting at 7 p.m. includes reports from the mayor and committees, progress update by the Jones Park committee, letters from Agler and Gaeddert, presentation of working draft of the 2009 budget, citizens’ presentation, and miscellaneous.

Democrat picnic

The Lyon County Democratic committee will have its annual summer picnic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St.

Meat and beverages will be provided. Participants are to bring side dishes or desserts. The picnic is open to the public. A special guest will be Linda Slattery, wife of Jim Slattery, candidate for the U.S. Senate. Those who wish to help sponsor the picnic can send a check for $75. Donations for state and local candidates also will be acceptable.

Cards for kids

A “Love Letters — Random Cards of Kindness” chapter is being organized in Emporia by Julie Cooper, with Scrappy Girls as corporate sponsor.

According to a news release, the “goal is to create positive and inspirational homemade cards for children with life-threatening illnesses. We also want to inspire others to establish chapters in their hometowns.”

A chapter gathering to make cards will be held from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. July 18 at Scrappy Girls, 725 Commercial St.

Immunizations at enrollment

An immunization clinic will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 25 and July 28 at Centralized Enrollment at Emporia High School.

Immunizations and enrollment can be done in one place. Medicaid, insurance, cash or checks will be accepted. To be considered for a discount, people need to bring proof of income.
