All the entries are in for Rack Attack 2008, and soon you’ll be able to cast your vote for your favorite decorated newsstand.
Rack Attack 2008, cosponsored by the Emporia Arts Council and The Gazette, began Tuesday at the Emporia Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St., with an exhibit of creatively adorned Gazette newsstands.
Six local groups — the arts council, the Flinthills Mall, the Polar Bear Plunge, McNeese Customs, Thurston’s Plus and the Quilters’ Guild — and one local artist, Andy Rader, submitted entries. Six of the seven entries will be on display at the arts center through July 19. The Quilters’ Guild entry will be displayed at the Flinthills Mall and with the rest of the entries at the upcoming Lyon County Free Fair.
Some of the entries add plenty of surface area to the standard newsstand. For example, the McNeese Customs entry features the front end of a motorcycle on one side, and the back end of the motorcycle on the other, complete with the handlebars and seat. The Polar Bear Plunge newsrack features the head and legs of a polar bear.
Exhibit patrons can vote for their favorite newsstand by inserting change into the coin slots. Voters will also be able to cast their monetary votes both at the free fair and afterward, when the racks are displayed in locations across town. In September, The Gazette will count the change for each entry. The person or organization with the most change wins the contest and will have the money donated to a charity of the person’s or organization’s choice.
Ground rules for the contest stated that all newsstands had to remain fully functional, with the coin slot, return and back door all working normally; that racks not have mobile or electrically powered parts; that racks must be weatherproof and safe for use; and that the front window displaying the newspaper must be unobstructed.
“It’s always amazing to see the creativity come out and see what people can do with a red box that sits out on a corner,” arts council Executive Director Melissa Windsor said. “It’s always fun to see how much more interesting it can become.”

I hope you place them inside businesses......remember what happened to some of the "Corkys"?.......they were vandalized and stolen from some of the locations by some dimwits.
