The rematch with Lawrence wasn’t any kinder for the Emporia AAAs, as they fell 12-3 and 11-4 in Tuesday’s doubleheader in Lawrence.
Emporia held a lead in both games before Lawrence piled on the runs late.
The AAAs grabbed a 2-0 advantage in Game One before Lawrence responded with four in the first, one in the second and seven in the third.
“We didn’t throw a lot of strikes on the mound,” Emporia coach Aaron Lechien said, “and when we did, they hit it.”
Emporia tacked on its final run in the third.
Zach Gifford led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Michael Knight was 1-for-2 with a stolen base, while Harrison Stone also was 1-for-2 with a double.
Taylor Clark added a stolen base and a run scored.
The AAAs once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game Two, but Lawrence crept back, scoring single runs in the first and third before posting four in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Jared Krause started for Emporia, going five innings.
“He did a good job. He competed well and had two pitches he threw for strikes,” Lechien said. “In the fourth inning, I don’t know if it was fatigue or just him leaving the ball up. Lawrence made (his mistakes) hurt.”
Emporia posted one run in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Krause led his team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Clark went 1-for-3 with a run and stolen base, while Knight added a triple and RBI.
Stone was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Cameron Smith chipped in an RBI and run scored.
Emporia’s next game will be in the Mike’s Classic at Soden’s Grove. The AAAs open the tournament with an 8:15 contest Friday against Salina.
Emporia Golds’ game canceled
The Emporia A-16 Gold squad had its scheduled doubleheader against K.C. Post 199 canceled because of rain.
The Golds’ next games will be at the Zone Tournament in Manhattan starting a week from today.
Emporia’s home doubleheader against Lawrence on Tuesday also has been canceled and will not be made up.
