A bad column

Originally published 10:10 a.m., July 5, 2008

FOR ITS DISTORTION and one-sidedness, Dan Tomasson’s column in the June 24 Gazette merits an emphatic retort.

Discussions between Obama and McCain in February on campaign funding were provisional on both sides since neither candidate could predict his future source of funds. As Obama began pulling ahead in finances, McCain wavered back and forth on his alternatives. To equalize the playing field, McCain now righteously claims foul because he has no option but to accept public financing while Obama with his massive public contributions stands to raise three times the funding than does McCain. In short, there was no firm, definitive agreement to begin with. But what does Tomasson tell his readers? In an attempt to villainize Obama as duplicitous and not true to his word, Tomasson contrasts the angelic McCain as entirely clean, correct and straight on the matter. What a colossal ruse!!

In their unrelenting quest for power, how much can we believe anything the Republicans say, given their appallingly evasive and devious record of the last eight years — especially now with recent disclosures regarding the corrupt use of grossly politicized discrimination, an illegal offense, in the hiring of Justice Department attorney applicants? Is there no shame in Republican ranks, no level to which they will not descend to dupe the public into supporting them? Certainly we can anticipate an avalanche of sleaze and mud from McCain’s 257 supporters spewing their venom while McCain looks on in innocence, as did Bush. This, Tomasson casually shrugs off.

I've got news for all of you. Obama will be elected and all of our taxes will go up. That will help us on the price of gas, won't it? He and his Democrat-led Congress will push through legislation that will make the Clinton Administration look like the Reagan Years. They will appoint judges that will not care what the Constitution says, but what Soros says. Our standing in the War Against Terrorists will crumble as we're being laughed at and ridiculed worldwide for being weak-willed and cowardly. All of you that look at Obama as the second coming of Camelot will be surprised to find out that he more closely resembles the peanut farmer.
Is he a liar? Sure, he's a politician. Where have you all been?
Birds fly, wind blows, rain falls, and politicians lie. And you all think Barry Obama's different. Must be because he's a closet white Kansan, I guess. He can't be all bad, right?

The problem for Obama on this whole public finance matter is that it exposed him for what he is, and that is that he is just a politician, making decision based upon political gain, just like all of the others. The reason that this is such a problem for him is that, with media help, he has acquired rock star status (complete with women fainting at his rallies), maybe even Messiah status because he is the agent for CHANGE. Decisions like this point out that he is no different than the others, and that is not change. Rev. Wright said it best when asked how he felt when Obama threw him under the bus after 20 years of association, "Barak is just a politician." Women were not fainting for just a politician.

If you think gasoline is expensive now, and that you pay too much in taxes now, wait and see what will happen if Obama and his mama get elected. Also kiss your constitutional rights, such as those granted in the 2nd Amendment, goodbye when liberal left-wing socialism becomes the law of the land under slick Barack and his do-nothing Democrat congress. America is at a critical crossroad. I hope voters pick the right path, as opposed to the left path.

Your taxes will actually go down if Obama is elected and he will be. Things will get done finally in this country. Everyone will have a job. Everyone will have health care and plenty of food. Left wing socialism is good for America, contrary to what you right wing Fascists say. You cannot live the future on your own. We all need to face the future together. Vote Obama this November.

Bjnemp (anonymous) says...

Merkywater: You need to read a newspaper or watch one of your buddy Obama's speeches on TV. He has said repeatedly and consistently that he intends to raise taxes drastically if elected. And you must be a communist, socialist, or hopelessly insane to actually believe "Everyone will have a job. Everyone will have health care and pleny of food. Left wing socialism is good for America." In this nation, if you want a job, healthcare, and plenty of food, you get off your lazy butt and go to work, not rob from the successful to support the millions of fourth generation welfare families who do nothing and expect everything. People with backbone and work ethic have no problem living "the future on your own" as long as some socialist left-wing liberal nut job is not bleeding them dry with excessive taxation.

Although I do not have a job, I am sure that I can get one if Obama is elected. I do live on food stamps right now but that is because of the war in Iraq that George W. Bush has caused. He has spent all of the money that should have been spent on getting folks like myself trained for future jobs. You just can't spend your money on a war like that, that there is no hope of ever winning and still have money left for the necessities of life, like training folks here to do meaningful work. So please everyone, and Mr. Bjnemp, go out of your way to get to the polls in November and vote for Obama.

Come on, people, lets stop being mean to MerkyWater. He is telling us what we, like, need to know. Bush and the Repubs are so yesterday. Obama is the future, and that is so good. Bush like totally overreacted to everything. It is to bad about people getting killed on 9-11 but war is never the way to go. That was 7 years ago. Its time to forget it. Obama will get us out of war and would never, never, get us in to a war no matter what. He can get along with every person on our planet since he had a muslim father and stepfather but is a christian, so every body can be happy. He is not one of those nutty christians, either. He would take the money from all of those rich capitalists and give it to us, who really really need it. Some people wont like this but he is right that it is good for gas to be high because we have global warming. Those repubs say that, like, if gas is to hi that the econmy will be bad but dont they get it? Barack will get the money to us by taking it from the rich so they are wrong about the econmy going bad because we will have plenty of money. And the rest of the world will love us for a change. Dont you want that? Just come to Obama and trust the problems to him.

You can never forget 9-11, just like you can never forget Pearl Harbor or the Holocaust. You must remember the lessons learned from those experiences.

Like, if gas is high, like the economy tanks, like because our economy at the moment like runs on gas. If the economy tanks, like Obama will not be able to take money from people who work to give it to people who don't because like, they won't have any to take.

Come on, people, you need to like start realizing how you have like messed everything up. The Repubs have been in power since like befor dirt so lets wake up and get everthing straight with Obama and the Democrats so they can clean up everthing. Its a lot better than the reactcionary stuff that the repubs want. Yes, lets forget 9-11 and get back on track. I no most of us that came to Obama wont be as honest as I am and they may be like mad at me for being so honest about it but it is like time that we get real. It is time that we made the rich people pay and then everthing will be good. We wont need gas or coal or nukes because we can get something green if we would just like give Obama a chance. That is all that we like need to do - give him a chance and we will never, ever want to go back to the Repubs. U will see.

Inform me then Sarah. What other "stuff" did you learn in ancient history? We won't need gas or coal or nukes, because we "can get something green", that being what? In the meantime, even if your knight in shining armor Obama is elected, the world still runs on coal, nukes and gas. As it is, the price of energy is squeezing the hell out of business, and Sarah, business is where all this money is going to come from for the "share the wealth" plan you want Obama to embark on.

I give you high marks for honesty, you are telling the truth when you call these policies socialist. I just hope Obama and his campaign are as honest as you are.

Sarah is right. The rest of you are wrong. Obama will straighten out everything that is wrong with America. We will have good jobs. We will have plenty of food and shelter and free medicine. That free medicine is important to me as I have very high medical bills and they really haven't figured out what is wrong with me yet. I go to the Dr. almost every week and he is getting cranky with me. I will be glad when the government picks up my medical bills. I plan to switch Drs. then. And like Sarah said who really cares about the past. We are in the present and heading for the future, not the past. All of that stuff that happened in the past is past. If you want a President who looks into the past then go ahead and vote for McCain but if you want a future looking president then vote for McCain. Everything will be free in the future. Things will get so cheap that we won't have to work.

U r right on w/ everthing else. alfalfa dont you c how if we did it that way that everthing would be good? It might take a couple months or even 1 yr to get stuff going but it would be like worth it. We can make educated guesses, but in the end, we won't truly know how a candidate will perform until he or she is put up to the task- and, obviously, no one candidate can please everyone. I think all this vitriol is premature, and we must keep in mind that we will never have all the facts.

Some of my friends are die-hard conservatives, some are equally vehement liberals, and some are in the middle. The important thing is not our politics, but the fact that we all get along in the end.

Whoever gets elected, their work is going to be completely uphill. Neither party seems to have a real grip, in my opinion, on just how serious our economic troubles are. If they do they are doing a great job of hiding it. Prices for every single thing we buy and use are going up, I cannot see incomes going up to match. Cheap interest has been the hope to stimulate the economy, yet in the past interest rates were raised to stave off inflation. It appears now that pushing rates up to curb inflation will only make things worse.

I think as Americans we better prepare ourselves to make some major sacrifices in the form of higher taxes and fewer programs and benefits if we want our country to get through this. I don't think either party can avoid that.

We need to remember we are electing more than just a President this fall, and each person we vote for will have an impact on our future, not just the President.

I never thought I would live long enough to hear Americans make comments like I just read from Merkywater and Sarah4barack. Is this what we have come to? Punish those who worked hard to get a good education, start and build a business, provide thousands of jobs for people, and pay the vast majority of taxes, by taxing them even more in order to subsidize those too lazy or stupid to get an education and good job? Lord help us if Obama is elected.

Sarah4barack: As for those despicable "rich capitalists" you want to take all the money from and give it to the poor: who do you think provides all the jobs in this nation? And are you aware that the top 5% of income earners in this nation pay 70% of the income taxes? 30% of Americans don't pay a dime in taxes. How about we start heavily taxing them---people like you and Merkywad---instead of those already paying more than their share and who provide the jobs you and Merky can't qualify for. And what in the world could possibly make you think a janitor should earn more money than his employer? What Communist propaganda have you been reading?

If there are others out there as misinformed and ignorant as Sarah and Merky, our nation is in BIG trouble.

Bjnemp, I am sure that you make too much money for the work that you do. You only need so much money to get along in this world. Obama will see that individuals with whom misfortune has beset utilize your excess funds. You should feel good that you are helping one or more less fortunate folks than yourself, live a much happier life than they would without your funding. Obama is just assuring that everyone gets his or her fair share of the American Dream. OK so it is Socialist. What makes any difference about that? People need to depend on each other. Obama will assure that this happens. He will fix all of our needs and those he can't fix he will rig so that we can fix them ourselves. There won't be any rich people any more. There won't be any poor people any more. There will only be middle class people. If you want to work you will pay taxes and if you choose not to work then you will get a share of those that do work. It's pretty simple and I am surprised that more of you than Sarah can't see the light. Vote for Obama and give him a chance to prove that it will work.

MerkyWater and Sarah. First of all MerkyWater get off your butt and work. I will admit some of the jobs that are posted you may feel are beneith you but guess what it will still help pay the bills. There are jobs out there for people who want to work and are not afraid to work. It is folks like you that are sending our jobs else where, where people are not afraid to put in a good days work. You are so dilutional if you think the politicians are not wealthy. Care to look at Kennedy for one. And maybe your right cut all the politicians pay at least in half since they all have law practices for the most part. As for the Presidential pay they will do well with only say 50k a year. I mean look at all the benefits they get, free health care for them and their family, free food, housing, transportation and personal security. The rest of the money will be better used elsewhere.
As for Sarah you poor misguided soul. Will you please if you have a job turn ALL of your money over to someone who does not since you do not believe that we need religion and ALL of your money has "In God we trust" on it. You will probably one of the ones stating like the mayor of New Oleans why did God let this happen to me if something drastic ever happens. Well I can not say as I blame him although he did not allow it to happen he gave the people free will to make their own decisions. If we do go to a depression there will be very few folks that will make it. You had better know how to work hard and live on very little money if any. True country folk will survive and where will you be Sarah?
I wish that it was required for all people to spend a large amount of time with people who lived through the depression and other eras of history Unfortunatly what is taught by the books has been rewritten to suit someones needs at the time and is not necessarily the truth.
I wish that we as a country would get this excited about every election, but we don't. It is not just the Presidential election that makes a difference, it is ALL of them.
People need to use common sense when listening to or reading things in the media. But someone once told me that common sense is not so common any more. What a shame.
