Voter registration
Residents of Lyon County will be able to register to vote, as well as be entertained, during the Brown Bag Concert Wednesday at the Emporia Public Library.
The League of Women Voters will assist with voter registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, which has been made a remote registration site for the Lyon County Clerk’s Office, according to Ann Havenhill, league representative.
Leadership applications
Applications for the 21st class of Leadership Emporia are being accepted through Aug. 8. People interested in applying for the program may pick up an application at the Trusler Business Center, 719 Commercial St., or go online to www.emporiakschamber.org. To recommend someone for the class, call the chamber office, 342-1600, with the nominee’s name and mailing address. Selections will be announced within two weeks after the deadline. Leadership Emporia will begin with a retreat Sept. 25 and 26 and run through Dec. 19. Class sessions will be on Thursdays.
Chapman fireworks
CHAPMAN — Despite piles of rubble and plenty to do in the cleanup of wreckage left by a huge tornado, Chapman is dotted with fireworks stands.
Mayor Bob Gaetz said Wednesday, “I figured we needed a little celebration after what we’ve been through.” He convinced the city council that no harm would come from residents setting off fireworks a safe distance away from the damaged areas of town.
The EF3 tornado on the night of June 11 killed a 21-year-old woman and damaged or destroyed 60 percent of the town’s buildings.
Among those Chapman residents selling fireworks — the police chief, the superintendent of schools and a family doctor.
