U-12 Red Rebels go 5-1
in league tournament
The U-12 Red Line Rebels baseball team went 5-1 in the Ken Berry League Tournament in Topeka.
The Rebels opened play with a revenge win over a team they lost to in the regular season by beating the 26th-ranked team in the state, the Topeka Astros, 4-2. In the second round, the Rebels faced the No. 2-ranked team in the state, the Topeka Shockers, and lost in a seven-inning contest, 9-7.
The Rebels started their way back through the losers bracket by beating the 38th-ranked team, the Topeka Vipers, 11-1. Then, the Rebels beat the Astros again, 5-2, before meeting up with the Topeka Heat. The consolation semifinal game went back and forth, with the Rebels coming out on top 13-11 to advance to the championship game against the Shockers.
One inning doomed the Rebels in the championship, as errors lead to four unearned runs and a 5-1 loss.
The Rebels will play this week in Kansas City in the U-12 AA State Tournament. They are currently ranked No. 8.
Emporia Municipal to be closed at times on
Monday, Tuesday
The Emporia Municipal Golf Course will be closed until 1:30 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, as it will be hosting the Kansas Golf Association’s Junior Amateur Two-Man Championship.
Eighty players will be participating from across the state in the event.
Police: NY man dies
after assault at
softball game
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A softball player accused of fatally punching a rival team member after a recreational league game spent more than four years in prison for battering a man with a golf club, according to state records.
Sean Sanders, 27, ran off the field after punching Daniel Andrews, 37, in the head at the end of the game Sunday afternoon in Parma, a Rochester suburb, and was captured a mile away some six hours later, authorities said.
Andrews was taken unconscious to a hospital and placed on life support. He died Monday evening.
