Interim chief at Newman
Following the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Terry Lambert last week, Newman Regional Health has an interim CEO, Joyce Grove Hein, who arrived Monday afternoon from her home in Nebraska.
Fred Harder, chairman of the Newman Regional Health Board of Trustees, said Hein has 27 years of healthcare management experience and 15 years in the position of CEO. She was the CEO for eight years at Lakewood Medical Center in Morgan City, La., and seven years at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Neb. Since retiring in July 2007, she has served as an independent consultant to healthcare organizations and as an interim administrator.
Hein holds a master’s degree in human and health service from St. Mary’s College of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in government from Southern Illinois University.
Safe Kids grant
The Emporia Police Department announced that Safe Kids Emporia is the recipient of a grant from Safe Kids Worldwide.
Safe Kids Emporia will get $1,800 in grant money. Officer Larry Clay, coordinator for Safe Kids Emporia, said the money will allow the department and its partners to continue the program of safety education and inspection of child safety seats. Recent partners include Longbine Motors, Staples and Wal-Mart. The award is double the previous year’s amount.
“It speaks well of the community and our efforts to keep our kids safe,” Clay said.
Emporia Police Chief Gary Smith agreed.
“In tough economic times, we have to rely on members of our community and other funding sources to keep important programs like Safe Kids going. Officers Larry Clay and Jeff Illk are to be commended for their efforts to find the funding sources to keep Safe Kids a viable program. I’m also appreciative of our business partners, who are key to the continued success of Safe Kids Emporia,” Smith said.
