The first of two Emporia teachers heard this morning that she will be nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year.

Lori Linville, a fifth-grade teacher at Lowther South Intermediate School, will be nominated for the honor by the Emporia National Education Association. She will represent the district as an elementary teacher nominee.

The district’s secondary teacher nominee was scheduled to be announced at 3 p.m. today at Emporia High School.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education to recognize “excellent teachers who serve as leaders in the profession across the state,” according to Nancy Horst, community relations director for the district.

Each district may nominate one elementary and one secondary teacher. Each must be a full-time classroom teacher who has completed at least five years as a classroom teacher.

Linville completed her student teaching in the Emporia school district before graduating from Emporia State University. She has taught fourth grade at Bucklin and has been a teacher at Lowther South since 1994. Her students here have included English language learners and special education students.

She has an endorsement for teaching English as a Second Language and also has a master’s degree from ESU.

Finalists for the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year will be announced in September in each of the four Congressional districts. Winners will be announced in November in Wichita.

Congratulations Lori!
You have spent many years studying, and working within this community, and I am glad that you are finally being honored for your dedication and hard work. You are a shining example of what can be accomplished by having a good work ethic and loving what you do. I know that your students love you. That alone makes you a tremendous asset to this community and deserving of this honor.
