Northern Heights’ Haydon Parks puts up a shot in front of Chase County’s Eli Fowler during Tuesday night’s game in Allen. Parks scored 13 points in Northern Heights’ 58-27 victory.

ALLEN — The Chase County Bulldogs had the unpleasant privilege Tuesday night of taking on a Northern Heights team that was coming off its first loss of the season.

The result wasn’t pretty.

The No. 9-ranked (Class 3A) Wildcats seemingly took out their frustrations from Friday night’s loss to Osage City on the Bulldogs, jumping out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and rolling to a 58-27 victory.

“We were a little bit upset about our loss last week, ... and there were a lot of guys that wanted it pretty bad tonight,” Heights senior Michael Glass said. “I think we tried to just play better than we did against Osage. We knew we weren’t playing up to our potential, so we just brought as much focus as we could to this one.”

The Bulldogs (2-12) probably wished the Wildcats (12-1) had put off that focus for one more game, as it appeared early on that Chase County might be able to at least hang around.

Chase County actually led midway through the first quarter, 9-8, thanks in part to four points from Eli Fowler and a 3-pointer by Chayne Onek.

But things quickly turned sour for the Bulldogs, while things started to work out pretty smoothly for Heights.

The Wildcats went on a 16-2 run to close out the first period to go ahead 24-11, the stretch highlighted by 3-pointers from Levi Hizar and Glass that each took a few bounces on the rim before dropping through the net. Heights’ Haydon Parks also ended the quarter with six of his eventual 13 points.

“Levi and I both had a couple of threes that took some good rolls for us, and Haydon was pretty dominating in the post,” Glass said. “I think we had some pretty good ball movement too, more so than what we’ve had the last few weeks.”

By halftime, Heights had built a 39-16 lead and was shooting 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field, while Chase County was just 6-of-27 (22 percent).

“That’s the way we play best, to get out on somebody early and make them chase us and make them have to handle what we want to do instead of us trying to work out what they’re doing to us,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “It’s a lot easier to play with a lead.”

Not helping Chase County’s cause in the first half was a poor performance from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs shot an ice-cold 3-of-19 from the foul stripe, a stat that was a thorn in Chase County coach Kip Wilson’s side following the game.

“That’s going to kill you anytime,” Wilson said. “That alone would have kept us in the first half, and that could have changed our attitude going into the second half.

“Mentally, we weren’t there tonight. Physically, we weren’t there tonight. It was a poor performance on our part.”

By the third quarter, Chase County — coming off playing in the week-long Lyon County League Tournament — appeared a step slow on both the offensive and defensive ends, as the Bulldogs only mustered four points in the frame. Meanwhile, Glass, who finished with 10 points, hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in the third period that made it 53-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We run pretty deep,” Glass said, “and with our players coming off the bench that have a lot of speed, our intensity kind of wore them down a little bit.”

Fowler led Chase County with seven points. Brian Palermo, the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, was held scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting.

Northern Heights’ Amy Lee brings the ball down the court during Tuesday night’s game in Allen against Chase County. Lee and the Ladycats defeated Chase County, 42-27.

If every player on the Northern Heights girls basketball team played like junior Sarah Boline, Tim Riemann would be a very happy coach.

The 5-foot-8 forward scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds — both game highs — on Tuesday for Heights, leading the Ladycats to a 42-27 victory over Chase County in a game marred by a combined 59 turnovers.

“Sarah played strong tonight,” said Riemann, Heights’ coach. “She was one of the girls who played strong basically the whole game. When she plays strong, good things are going to happen for us, and we want to get the rest of those girls to play up to that level where we’re tough every time we touch the basketball.”

Boline was a consistent force down low for Heights in a game otherwise lacking much flow, as neither team seemed to want to hold on to the basketball.

“It wasn’t our best,” Boline said. “I think we can play a lot better.”

However, Heights’ full-court press got the better of the Lady Bulldogs (1-14) right from the start, as Heights jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Chase County turned it over four times in the first 3 minutes and missed all five of its shot attempts.

“It wasn’t like this was the first game where we’ve been pressed,” Chase County coach Gene Windle said. “There was no reason we shouldn’t have handled it better than we did.”

After Chase County regrouped enough to pull to with five points at 14-9, Heights pulled away midway through the second quarter thanks to a 7-0 run that was started and ended by a pair of Boline stick-backs off Heights misses. Heights led 21-9 at that point, and though the Lady Bulldogs cut the deficit to 21-14 by halftime, Chase County never got any closer.

Heights put things away with a 13-5 run to open the second half — a stretch in which Chase County committed 10 of its 34 turnovers.

“In the second half, we came out with more energy and did the things we needed to do to get better,” Riemann said. “We came out and found a way to win.”

Ashley Cahoone led Chase County with nine points despite being in foul trouble for most of the game.

No other player besides Boline scored in double figures for Heights, though the Ladycats had eight players score at least two points.
