ESU tracksters break 2 more school records at Iowa State Open

The Emporia State track and field teams added to their impressive weekend by breaking two more school records and also posting two provisional qualifying marks on Saturday at the Iowa State Open.
“This is always an exciting meet for out athletes to compete in,” ESU track coach Dave Harris said. “It opens their eyes just walking into a facility and seeing a 300-meter indoor track — and with the competition, it pushes many athletes to personal bests.”
Jonel Rossbach notched a school record in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in a time of 9:50.39. Rossbach broke Susan Stine’s 1987 time of 9:59.36, which was the longest-standing ESU indoor record before this weekend.
Rossbach also is the school’s record-holder in the mile run.
Freshman Kenton Lonberger added his second school record of the weekend on Saturday, provisionally qualifying with a time of 6.83 seconds in the 60-meter dash.
On Friday, Lonberger broke the ESU school record by running a 21.97 in the 200-meter dash.
“It was exciting for our entire team to see Kenton race the top sprinters at Iowa State,” Harris said. “To come away with two school records in one meet ... I don’t know if I have ever seen that before in my years at ESU.
“And I believe he wants to be challenged to see if he can go faster.”
Craig Saalfeld was the other provisional qualifier, tying the fourth-best high jump in school history by going 6 feet, 10.25 inches.
Other top-five finishers for ESU were Jaclyn Sill (4th, 400-meter dash) and Damon Birk (4th, shot put).
ESU’s next action will be Friday at the Pitt State Invitational in Pittsburg.
