EHS debaters place
The Emporia High School debate team participated in the 5A state championship tournament in Garden City a week ago. Brothers Alex Bonnet and Drew Bonnet received fourth-place medals in the two-speaker division, marking the third consecutive top-four finish in the EHS debate program.
The four-speaker team of Erica Bennett, Chase Miller, Kristina Mease, Kathryn Scherich and Hannah Watkins finished seventh. This is the third straight state appearance in the four-speaker tournament for EHS.
Cami Shaw, Levi Lapping, Sady Strong, Sean Karns, Zach Windsor and Ariana Nasrazadani also participated for EHS at the competition. According to Emporia head coach Scott Bonnett in the press release, “Our kids had an excellent season. We look forward to continuing to uphold the long-standing Emporia High tradition of excellence in debate. We have some really outstanding young debaters returning next year.”
Bonnet said the team would lose outstanding seniors Alex Bonnet, Chase Miller, Erica Bennett, Levi Lapping, Cami Shaw and Sady Strong to graduation. Several EHS debaters may continue their debate careers in college.
Seniors Alex Bonnet and Chase Miller will represent EHS and the Kansas City region at the national championship tournament in Appleton, Wis., over the Memorial Day weekend. In preparation they will go to tournaments in Dallas and Chicago during the next two months to compete against many of the top debate programs in the nation.
