Six alcohol establishments caught in sting

Sunday, January 27, 2008

Six alcohol-serving establishments in rural areas outside of Emporia have charges pending after the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office caught them attempting to sell alcohol to a minor, the sheriff’s office reported in a release Sunday.

A minor acting as an agent of the sheriff’s office went to 10 establishments that sell alcohol and attempted to make purchases. Deputy Pat Stevenson said he couldn't yet reveal the six establishments that agreed to sell to the minor.

The sheriff’s office was acting on a “Party Patrol” grant provided by the state’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

It's about time. This is great news!!! Now, I hope these establishments get closed down, or get fined HEAVILY, not just a tap on the wrist.

Geez, what about all the ones IN TOWN that serve alcohol to minors!!! They need to "sting" them, too!!! And, then crack down on all the permissive parents who ALLOW this stuff to go on in their OWN HOMES and BUY the booze!

Good gosh people. I know the owners of one of these establishments. They are great stand up people. The worker who got them in trouble miscalculated the dates. He/she did card the minor. A simple human error. I'm saying all of the places are like this one and don't make a habit of serving minors. Why don't they look at the ones in town here? I have seen plenty minors get served. That is until I say "Hey I know that kid and they aren't 21" Before ya'll scoff Yes, I have done just that. The sherriff dept. is doing a good thing, don't get me wrong. Just saying before you go condeming good honest people to loosing their business and lively hood you may want to get the whole story. I'm done now go ahead and give me all ya got about my friends and their morals. I don't really give a damn. I know them, you don't.

I also applaud the Sheriff's Department for the action. The PD has done this type of thing too. I believe MOST businesses do make an honest effort to do the right thing. As for the miscalculation of someone's age, it really could have been an honest error but now this person (and others) have additional incentive to be more exacting. As for the fake IDs, law enforcement officers all have varying degrees of training to recognize false indetification but they cannot be everywhere and cannot inspect all IDs. Nor can they recognize all phony cards; I've seen some that are very close to the real McCoy. The State of Kansas used to issue your ID card or your driver's license at the local driver's license office. That practice was stopped because of numerous thefts of blank IDs and DLs.

One business was charged with Contributing to the Deliquency of a Minor.

Having a known minor go into an establishment that requires you to be 21 yrs of age to possess, purchase, and or consume alcohol with the directive to do the before mentioned actions...... who is really guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor here?

The Sheriff's Office was doing their job, I applaud that. I have never been fond of using kids to buy cigarettes and alcohol from businesses.

Hey neighbor,

"who is really guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor here?" "The Sheriff's Office was doing their job, I applaud that."

Make up your mind. Better for people to think you're a fool than to open your mouth and prove it!

"One business was charged with Contributing to the Delinnnnnnnnnquency of a Minor." You must be in tight with someone. Where did you get such information??? Can you confirm that??? Are you just opening your mouth again??

I know the owner of one of the establishments, he told me about the citation he was given today when I spoke with him. Is that explained simple enough for you to understand? Or must we wait for the daily report to come out to prove it?

Granted, my response is contradictory, but wasn't the charge as well?
