The Northern Heights boys fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, as Osage City overcame a rough start to down the Wildcats, 67-65 in Osage City, handing Heights its first loss of the season.
After Northern Heights (11-1, 4-1 Flint Hills League) began the game on a tear — taking a 19-11 lead after the end of the first quarter — Osage City rallied by outscoring Heights 21-14 in the second period to go into halftime down by just one point at 33-32.
From there, the game became a back-and-forth battle, Heights coach Lanny Massey said.
“In the second quarter,” Massey said, “we let that lead slip away from us, and the game became a dog fight.”
In the second half, Heights’ big man, Haydon Parks, got into foul trouble, which helped Osage City stay in it while Parks was on the bench. The Indians (9-3, 5-0) took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter, and then stretched that advantage out to eight at one point in the final frame.
Heights made a final run and closed the gap to one point with 11.5 seconds left, but the Wildcats turned the ball over on their final possession, and Osage City held on from there.
“I think this was a learning experience for us,” Massey said, “and I know we will respond in practice next week and correct some of our mistakes.”
Osage City won thanks to 9-of-17 shooting from behind the three-point line and despite Parks going off for a game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Tyler McClellan also chipped in 15 for the Wildcats.
Osage City was led by Josh Carson’s 17 points, with 15 coming on 3-pointers.
