The Emporia State indoor track and field teams started the Iowa State Open with some record-setting performances, as the Hornets had two provisional qualifiers and a school record broken on Friday in Ames, Iowa.
Kenton Lonberger, who is the reigning MIAA men’s track athlete of the week, finished the 200-meter dash in 21.97 seconds to set a new school record. His time is the third-fastest in Division II this year.
He placed sixth in the event Friday.
Jonel Rossbach dominated the women’s 5,000-meter run, winning by almost a full minute with a provisional qualifying time off 17:26.34. Her time is the second-best in the nation this year and also the second-fastest time in ESU history behind Kadri Kelve’s 17:11.80, set in 2003.
Brooke Kent also improved on her provisional qualifying mark in the long jump, leaping 18 feet, 3 inches to take second.
