Wilson's 17 points helps Waverly to 58-44 win over Burlingame

Waverly's Brenna Wilson drives toward to the basket Thursday afternoon at White Auditorium. Wilson had 17 points in Waverly's 58-44 victory over Burlingame.

The first press didn’t turn out to be too effective for Waverly against the Burlingame girls on Thursday.

Press No. 2 worked wonders, though, and the full-court, all-out, man-to-man pressure turned out to be the difference in the Lady Bulldogs’ 58-44 victory in the consolation bracket of the Lyon County League Tournament.

Waverly’s defense forced 32 turnovers, with 22 of those coming in the second and third quarters.

“Once they got their press going, it shook our confidence,” Burlingame coach Eric West said, “and that was our demise.”

Burlingame ended the game with more giveaways (32) than shot attempts (30).

Still, the Lady Bearcats were able to solve the first of the presses thrown at them.

With Waverly using a defense that picked up full-court but later fell back into a 3-2 zone, Burlingame attacked the pressure and went 6-for-9 from the floor in the first quarter.

“We got off to a good start, and that’s something we talked about in the locker room,” West said. “I thought we did a good job with their press and took advantage of numbers and opportunities up ahead.”

Meanwhile, Waverly started 0-for-11 from the field, and the result was a 15-8 Burlingame lead after one quarter.

The Lady Bearcats scored their first basket of the second period to take their largest lead at nine points.

“They were doing a good job of getting the ball inside and putting it in the hole, so that’s why we changed and went man,” Waverly coach Dennis Tyson said. “It paid off.”

Burlingame's Shelby Love, right, fights for a rebound with Waverly's Tiffany Tyson Thursday afternoon at White Auditorium. Waverly beat Burlingame, 58-44.

And quickly, too.

Led by their defense, the Lady Bulldogs ended the half on a 14-2 run to take a 24-21 advantage into the break.

The cushion only grew after halftime.

Brenna Wilson scored Waverly’s first 10 points out of the intermission, going on a personal 10-2 spurt to push the lead to 34-23.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs defense allowed just one field goal in the third quarter.

“The first half, they played really good and they shot really good,” Wilson said. “We came out and shut that down.”

Waverly outscored Burlingame 18-6 in the third quarter, then built its lead to as high as 18 in the final frame.

Wilson led Waverly, scoring a game-high 17 points. Twelve of her points came in the third quarter.

“Brenna’s one that doesn’t look to score herself. She’s always looking for the other person,” Tyson said. “She knows that she’s going to have to score, and she’s done a good job all year.”

Megan Steward added a double-double for Waverly, posting 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Burlingame’s Miranda Fagan contributed 13 points, while Meghan Atchison and Shelby Creviston both added nine.

Waverly finished with more than double the shot attempts (64) of Burlingame (30).

With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs advanced to the tournament’s fifth-place game, to be played at noon Saturday.

“We came in sixth,” Tyson said, “so if we move up one, that’d be better than nothing.”
