For over seven months, Courtney George, Associated Student Government president, has been working to better Emporia State University for all students and now she is one of this month’s You Make A Difference Award winners.
George was elected by her peers last March as the 2007-08 president of the Associated Student Government at Emporia State. After having been involved in ASG for two years as the legislative director, George decided she wanted to take the next step to run for president.
“I wanted to make a difference for the students at ESU,” George said. “I felt I could accomplish something to help them.”
Since her election, she has taken on many responsibilities and positions to create the best environment at ESU possible.
George is not only the ASG president at ESU, but she is also a member of Faculty Senate and Classified Assembly. Her responsibilities include some statewide higher education duties, as she serves as the chair of the student advisory committee of the Kansas Board of Regents,.
Through all of her different roles, George is able to work with many different kinds of people. She said that’s one of the best parts of her job, and it will also help prepare her for what she plans to do in the future.
“Dealing with so many different people and the groups they represent and helping them solve issues is probably the best aspect of my job,” George said. “I hope to in the future make a difference through working in state government and improving conditions and finding solutions that truly benefit the lives of all Kansans.”
George said receiving the award meant a lot.
“It is very humbling for me to receive this award because I am simply trying to serve the students at Emporia State the best way I know how,” she said. “I am very honored to receive this award; however the accomplishments I achieved would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of my talented staff, my cabinet and the students who elected me.”

I have had the chance to personally work with Courtney a few years ago while being involved in ASG, and she definately deserves this award and recognition. Congratulations Courtney, and keep up the good work!
