There might have been only one person at White Auditorium who didn’t realize how well Shelby Buster was playing Tuesday afternoon at the Lyon County League Tournament.

And that was Shelby Buster herself.

During a 12-minute first-half stretch, Buster scored 16 straight points for fourth-seeded Madison, helping her team to a 50-30 victory over No. 5 seed Chase County.

“I didn’t even know I did that,” Buster said with a laugh.

After Morgan Stout put in two free throws to start the scoring, Buster followed with six field goals and four free throws, giving Madison an 18-11 lead with 2:07 left in the first half.

“She carried us,” Madison coach Glen Stout said. “We got them in to her, and she put them down.”

Madison was able to extend its advantage with defense.

After handling the ball well in the first quarter, Chase County turned it over nine times in the second quarter against the full-court press.

Madison allowed just five points in the second frame and held CCHS scoreless over the final 3 minutes of the half to take a 21-11 halftime lead.

“We moved our feet extremely well, which is what we had to do against them,” Stout said. “They’ve got two really quick guards, and our girls came ready to play.”

Madison pulled away with an 11-2 run in the third quarter before Buster re-emerged in the fourth.

The 5-foot-11 sophomore had three lay-ups in the first 4 minutes of the fourth period, helping Madison to its largest lead at 44-22.

“I think it’s just our guards looking (for us),” Buster said. “It’s a key — you have to have the outside look in and make sure they’re seeing the whole court.”

Meanwhile, Chase County suffered from a poor shooting day.

CCHS finished just 10-of-49 from the floor (20 percent).

“You could have put two baskets up there and let us take our pick,” CCHS coach Gene Windle said. “ ... It’s not the way we wanted to open the tournament. We’ve been playing better than that.”

Chase County also ended with 25 turnovers.

Buster finished with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting. She also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Morgan Stout added 12 points.

Madison still was far from perfect on the offensive end, making 21 of its 55 attempts (38 percent).

“It just didn’t seem like we could hit those two-foot shots,” Glen Stout said.

Aubrey Watts led all Chase County scorers with eight points, while Heather Duncan contributed six.

Despite being undersized inside, CCHS won the rebounding battle, 38-33.

“We always play hard,” Windle said. “We just didn’t finish tonight.”

With the victory, Madison advanced to play No. 1-seeded Olpe at 7 p.m. on Friday.

MHS fell in its first matchup with the Lady Eagles, 66-41, at Olpe in December.

“I’m really ready for it,” Buster said. “At the beginning of the season, I think we were not ready. Now, I’m really ready to play them.”

Chase County will take on ninth-seeded Harford at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Olpe 46, Hartford 16

Hartford figured if you can’t beat the Olpe Lady Eagles, you might as well try to keep them from scoring.

After falling behind early, the ninth-seeded Lady Jaguars went into a stall offense in the second half, passing the ball around the perimeter to keep the top-seeded Lady Eagles from getting the ball.

Still, Olpe went on to win the game, 46-16.

The Lady Eagles received balanced scoring in the first quarter, getting six points from Megan Woods and five each from Kathryn Flott and Katie Moyer to take a 20-6 lead.

Woods added seven more points in the second quarter, leading Olpe on an 11-2 run that made it 31-8 at half.

The scoring slowed considerably in the second half after Hartford played keep-away on offense. The Lady Eagles won the third quarter, 7-4, and the fourth quarter, 8-4.

Woods finished with a game-high 15 points, while Moyer added 12.

Samantha Wilkerson, Paige Hamman and Carmen Clark paced Hartford with four points each.
