Many of our community members strive to make our community a better place to live. Some of these extraordinary Lyon and Chase County citizens are CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates). These individuals deserve special recognition and praise for their hard work with abused and neglected children in the court system.

CASAs come from all walks of life, but all have one thing in common: a genuine, passionate concern for the well-being of children. Some CASAs are retired, some are students, and some are even employed full-time. CASAs are every age from 21 to 75-plus, and are not required to have any advanced education. CASA volunteers are examples of how everyday citizens can make huge differences in the lives of abused and neglected children.

CASAs step forward when children find themselves thrust into the court system through no fault of their own. They selflessly give of their time and energy to ensure that these children are more than just a name and a case number. They are real kids with real feelings, challenges and fears.

The CASA volunteer gathers information to help the court make informed, appropriate decisions about what is in the child’s best interest. They monitor the case until its end and make sure the child receives all of the services they need and will continue to need, and provide a voice for the child in court. Because of their commitment and dedication to better the lives of children, these volunteers should be commended.

There are currently 28 volunteers who advocate for children served by SOS CASA of the Flint Hills. More are needed. To find out how you can make a difference, call 343-2744.
