ESU tracksters take 2 firsts at Wildcat Invite
Emporia State’s Josh Schuler and Doug Marshall each picked up individual championships at Friday’s KSU Wildcat Invitational in Manhattan.
Schuler won the 200-meter dash, finishing in a time of 23.07 seconds, while Marshall went 46 feet, 5.25 inches in the triple jump to take the gold in that event.
Damon Birk picked up a provisional qualifying mark for the Hornets, taking second in the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 4.5 inches. He was runner-up only to 2003 World Outdoor Decathlon Champion Tom Pappas.
ESU also received second-place showings from Kenton Lonberger and Alex Pyle.
Lonberger’s time of 6.94 seconds is the third-fastest 60-meter dash time in school history, while Pyle’s high jump (6 feet, 8.25 inches) missed the provisional qualifying mark by one centimeter.
Pyle is expected to make the trip to Warrensburg, Mo., today to suit up for the ESU men’s basketball team in its game against Central Missouri.
The ESU women compete in the Wildcat Invitational today.

EMS ‘A’ team picks up 2 victories
The Emporia Middle School boys ‘A’ team improved to 4-0, taking a 50-33 victory over Manhattan Anthony on Tuesday and a 31-25 win over Shawnee Heights on Thursday.
Against Anthony, the ‘A’ team started slow, scoring only six points in the first quarter.
EMS remained in the game with solid defense.
“We were bigger and stronger than Anthony was and we were able to keep them out of the lane,” EMS coach Wade Redeker said. “They got no easy looks inside, and we kept them from getting dribble penetration.”
The second half was a different story.
EMS played some full-court man and trapping defenses in the third quarter, which woke the team up offensively.
As a result, the Vikings’ offense picked up and was able to get to the free-throw line.
EMS shot 12 free throws in the second half and made eight of them.
“We just attacked a whole lot better in our zone offense, and Anthony was pushed back on their heels,” Redeker said. “They couldn’t handle our big guys inside, and our guards did a good job of attacking the gaps in the zone.”
Seven out of the eight kids who played for EMS scored.
On Thursday, EMS had one of those nights where nothing would fall.
“We couldn’t get into any offensive rhythm,” Redeker said. “I don’t know how many two-footers we missed in the game (Thursday), but we missed a few.”
Shawnee Heights played a sagging man defense against the Vikings the entire game. EMS trailed 6-4 at the end of the first quarter but used a 10-2 second-quarter run to go up at half, 14-8.
Shawnee Heights took it to EMS in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 11-6 to close the gap to 20-19.
Heights took the lead (23–20) in the middle of the fourth quarter on two mid-range jumpers before EMS responded. With about 3 minutes left in the game, Austin Knight hit the lone field goal of the quarter: a 3-pointer from the wing.
“That shot was big,” Redeker said, “and it gave us some confidence and we pushed on from that point.”
EMS got a couple stops on defense and attacked much better on offense in the final minutes.
Once EMS pulled ahead, Heights had to foul, and the Vikings were able to knock down their free throws.
EMS scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, and eight of those points came from the line. The Vikings were 10-for-13 from the charity stripe overall.
Knight led the team in scoring with 16 points, while Collin Thomsen had seven. The ‘B’ team went 0-2 in its two games, falling 32-22 to Anthony and 22-8 to Heights.
Cody Dix had eight points and Jake Murrell added seven against Anthony.
